artist statement

All the pieces I create begin the same way…with a feeling.

I’m fascinated by energy. Not the kind we learn about at school that is measured in joules and kilowatts. I’m talking about the unseen, intangible kind. The kind you feel when you enter a room. The kind exchanged between two people sharing a hug. The kind that envelopes us when we spend time in nature.

Energy is all around us. It shapes how we feel.

I’m very conscious of the energy I bring to my art. My work is gentle and calming. It whispers rather than shouts. It offers a place to come to for some peace when the noise of the outside world becomes too much. I’m a nurturer at heart and find it impossible to separate this side of me from my art – it is woven into every tapestry I create.

I hope you can feel it.

about

Carol Matassa is a British textile artist based in the south east of England. She creates texture rich, abstract wall art in a muted colour palette, bringing a contemporary touch to an ancient practice.

Her work explores the textures, irregular forms and healing energy found in nature.

Carol blends and spins her own yarns before hand weaving on the loom, which has enabled her to develop the organic style and aesthetic that you see in her tapestries.

She currently lives in Essex, close to where she grew up, with her husband and daughter.
