Commission Policy

Last updated: September 2026

Thank you for your interest in commissioning a bespoke tapestry. Every commissioned piece is individually designed and handmade specifically for the client. Because of the time, materials and craftsmanship involved, the following terms apply to all commissions.

1. Commission Deposit & Payment

A 50% deposit is required before work on a commission begins.

Payment of the deposit confirms the commission and allows the artist to allocate time, purchase materials and begin creating the artwork.

The remaining 50% balance is due once the artwork has been completed and is ready for delivery or collection.

The completed artwork will not be released, shipped or made available for collection until the outstanding balance has been received in full.

Any agreed delivery or shipping charges may be payable separately.

2. Deposits & Refunds

Because commissioned artworks are bespoke and created specifically for an individual client, the 50% deposit is non-refundable once the commission has been accepted and work has commenced, except where the client has a legal right to a refund under applicable UK consumer law.

The deposit covers, among other things, time allocated to the commission, design and preparation work, materials and the commencement of the creative process.

Nothing in this policy is intended to exclude or restrict any statutory rights that cannot legally be excluded or restricted.

3. Client Cancellation

If you decide to cancel your commission after work has commenced, the initial 50% deposit will normally be retained to cover the time, materials and work already committed to the project, subject to your statutory rights.

If the artwork has been substantially completed or completed at the time of cancellation, the artist may also be entitled to payment for work and materials already provided or committed, subject to applicable law.

Any cancellation will be considered based on the stage of the commission and the circumstances of the cancellation.

4. Design & Client Approval

Before the artwork is created, the artist will agree the principal design, colours, dimensions and other key details with the client.

The client is responsible for providing accurate information and approving the agreed design and specifications.

Once production has commenced, significant changes to the agreed design, dimensions, colours or materials may not be possible. Where changes can be accommodated, they may result in additional costs and/or an extension to the estimated completion time.

The artist will discuss any significant additional costs with the client before proceeding.

5. Handmade Nature & Variations

Each tapestry is individually handmade. As a result, minor variations in colour, texture, stitching, dimensions and finish are a natural characteristic of handmade artwork and should not be considered defects.

Colours may also appear slightly different depending on the client's screen, lighting conditions and the materials used.

The finished artwork may therefore not be an exact reproduction of digital images, sketches or photographs previously provided.

6. Completion & Final Payment

The artist will notify the client when the artwork is complete and ready for final payment.

The remaining 50% balance must be paid before the artwork is released.

Once full payment has been received, arrangements will be made for collection or delivery/shipping as agreed with the client.

7. Delivery & Collection

The client is responsible for providing accurate delivery information and ensuring that someone is available to receive the artwork where delivery requires a signature.

Unless otherwise agreed, delivery or shipping costs are payable by the client.

The artist will take reasonable care when packaging the artwork for delivery. Once the artwork has been delivered and accepted by the client, the client is responsible for its safe storage, handling, installation and display.

Any damage to the artwork occurring during delivery should be reported to the artist as soon as reasonably possible, together with photographs of the packaging and artwork.

8. Installation & Care

Unless expressly agreed otherwise, installation of the artwork is the responsibility of the client.

The client should ensure that the appropriate fixtures, fittings and wall surfaces are used for the size and weight of the artwork.

The artist cannot accept responsibility for damage caused by unsuitable installation, inappropriate storage, exposure to excessive moisture, direct sunlight, heat, improper handling or failure to follow any care instructions provided with the artwork.

9. Completion Times

An estimated completion timeframe will be provided when the commission is agreed.

As each piece is individually handmade, completion dates are estimates rather than guaranteed deadlines unless a specific deadline has been expressly agreed in writing.

The artist will keep the client informed of any significant delay that is reasonably foreseeable.

Delays caused by the client, including late payment, delayed approval, failure to provide required information or requested changes, may result in the completion date being extended.

10. Copyright & Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, the artist retains copyright and intellectual property rights in the artwork and the underlying design.

Purchasing a commissioned physical artwork does not automatically transfer copyright to the client.

The client receives ownership of the physical tapestry once payment has been made in full, but does not acquire the right to reproduce, copy, commercially exploit or manufacture reproductions of the artwork without the artist's written permission.

The artist retains the right to photograph or film the completed artwork and use images of it for their portfolio, website, exhibitions, social media, marketing and other promotional purposes, unless otherwise agreed in writing with the client.

11. Artist Cancellation

The artist reserves the right to decline or, where necessary, cancel a commission in exceptional circumstances.

If the artist cancels a commission before completion and the cancellation is not due to the client's actions or breach of these terms, the artist will provide an appropriate refund of payments received for work that has not been completed, subject to applicable UK law.

12. Agreement to These Terms

By paying the 50% deposit, the client confirms that they have read and understood this Commission Policy and agree to the terms applicable to their commission.

Any variations to these terms must be agreed in writing between the artist and the client.

This policy is intended to operate alongside, and does not limit, any rights the client has under applicable UK consumer protection law.
